For their moral support throughout this writing, I wish to thank my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin McCann; my sisters, Helen and Connie, and their families; my brother, John, and his family; and all of my in-laws. Kristin, my niece and goddaughter, wrote the first paragraph for this book and then lost it, but I thank her anyway.

One of his first priorities as president was to make the college a graded school in order to catch up with modern education. He was also concerned with uniformity in studies so that student classification could be determined. He believed that the college needed better publicity and that a college newspaper would help the local public admire and appreciate Alcorn's activities. After serving only four months, he suffered an influenza attack in December and died suddenly. Andrew j. Howard, a mathematics teacher, was asked by the board of trustees to complete the school term while the search for a replacement took place.

Stone stated in his 1894 biennial message that Burrus's problems with the university were due to personality conflicts with the trustees rather than to any lack of efficiency. The faculty and students supported Burrus, but he did not return. After his resignation he spent a year practicing law in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He later returned to Nashville, Tennessee, where he died on March 27, 1917. The board of trustees selected Wilson H. Reynolds to become the new Alcorn president. Reynolds was a public school teacher in Vicksburg and was considered a man of high educational standing.
